If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, you may need to have a part or all of your breast removed. To give you back your form, some kind of remodeling needs to be done. How and when it is done depends on several factors. There are two main times that the procedure can be done, immediately and delayed.
The best way to determine when you need to have your surgery - you should discuss this as part of your initial consultation. This will help your surgeon know what direction to perform before any surgery. Some of the best results occur when your surgery involves some form of skin-like movement or nipple mastectomy.
Most of the time your procedure can be done at the same time that you have your mastectomy. This is called immediate breast reconstruction. The decision to have your procedure done immediately depends on your cancer stage, your medical condition, your preferred lifestyle, and what other therapies, such as radiation and chemotherapy, are needed to further treat your cancer.
Some of the benefits of immediate breast reconstruction are the lower emotional and social potential that you may experience after surgery. There is also a lower chance of cancer coming back, the ability to find it if it returns, or any delay in getting future treatment if needed. However, the disadvantages of the procedure being performed at the same time as the original mastectomy occurred are that you need to stay in the hospital longer for additional surgery, and possibly more scars. It can also reduce the amount of lymphedema you do not experience after mastectomy surgery.
Another type of mastectomy surgery you can do is delay. This can happen many years after the original surgery. The advantage of this type of surgery is that further treatment will not cause problems where the surgery will occur and patients will have more time to consider the options available. Their future health depends on the decisions they make. As always, there are drawbacks to this type of procedure. These include chest injuries, other surgeries and longer recovery times, and are often difficult to reconstruct after scarring. The results aren't always positive.
If it is determined that immediate breast reconstruction surgery is not working for you in your case, you may still have an extraordinary form of post-mastectomy. It may take just a few months to finish your new look.
