Tattoo Salabrasion - Not For the Faint of Heart

Tattoos have been part of human culture for over 4000 years. At the same time, the dilemma of eliminating it has been around for a long time. A technique known as salabration is the oldest and most brutal form of tattoo removal, and although there are more advanced methods of technology such as laser removal, it is still used today. But does it work and how does it work? Let's see.

What's that?

First used by a Greek physician named Aetius around 543 A.D., this is a cosmetic surgery procedure similar to dermabrasion. The process uses simple materials such as tap water, regular table salt and coarse materials such as wood blocks wrapped with gauze. Certainly not for the faint of heart, it involves pain and destruction of the superficial dermis.

Steps

The first tattoo area is shaved if any hair is present and is exposed to anesthetic spray. Then a mixture of salt and water is used in the area and coarse gauze is used to thoroughly scrub the area through the bleeding point. Following this, antibiotic ointment and sterile gauze are used and left in place for three days. After this time, the clothes will be removed, and the skin, which will be raw, will be covered with salt again for a few hours. Another treatment with antibiotic ointment is as follows and the area is repeatedly replaced and allowed to heal for another three days. The gauze is then removed and at that point, the skin may appear rough and have a rough texture. These peels will begin to separate from the healthy skin in less than one to five days, drawing pigment in them. As the skin heals, new skin begins to grow.

A Word Of Awareness

Although salabrasion can be done at home, it is not recommended and should always be made by a qualified specialist with sterile equipment to prevent infection. However, the procedure still carries risks. Scarring is at the top of the list. It makes sense that unwanted tattoos will be replaced with unsightly scars. Furthermore, it can take several days to heal, but can change into weeks if not done correctly. It should be noted that if the ink residues remain, additional treatment will be required to remove any remaining pigments, which are almost always the case.

Salabrasion can be an effective form of tattoo removal, but think about a very ugly scar that can take it. If that happens, then it might be wise to look into other methods or just leave it.
