Cancer is a dreaded disease. It is known to show the statistical "C" word that about 1 in 3 newborns will be diagnosed with some type of cancer in their lifetime. There are many factors that will occur such as race and environment. It attacks anyone, woman or man, young or old. Some cancers are very easy to detect with obvious signs and symptoms while others are difficult to detect. There are very few cancers, such as thyroid cancer and others that grow very fast with little time for treatment.
Cancer has an effect on the body. The effects all depend on the cancer as well as the physical and mental condition of the patient.
My experience with cancer is with papillary thyroid cancer. As I said before, it is a slow-moving cancer and in my case showed no obvious signs or symptoms other than a cyst containing normal body fluids.
With the removal of the cancerous organ, the thyroid cancer was discovered and that was the beginning of the cancerous change in my body. The removal of the cyst gave me a fragment about six inches long beneath my Adam's apple. It heals well only to be cut again for total thyroidectomy. Being a very fortunate person he also recovered well leaving a scar that was not clear. This is not true for everyone. Some patients are left with raised scars. These scars can cause the pain to always have a protected neck area.
Following radical neck surgery to remove some of my left kidney gland left with a scar starting from my right ear and reopening my original fixation. Once again I got better but this time there were a lot of changes. Now there is a slight curl on the right side of my neck. The area has a strong sense of urgency and has very little sensation.
It was a change that happened because of surgery. Now for changes caused by radioactive iodine treatment. Radioactive treatment is a common protocol for patients with total thyroidectomy due to thyroid cancer. The radioactive iodine when administered will attach to any thyroid tissue that remains in the body and destroy it, preventing the remaining cancer cells from growing. With my first treatment of radioactive iodine, I had a swelling in the neck area and since I swallowed it verbally, my mouth felt like I was drinking something very hot and burning it. Radioactive iodine enters the salivary glands and appetite. I have lost the function of many salivary glands which causes difficulty in eating dry foods like crackers. My taste has been affected, changing the pleasure I experience from certain foods.
Radioactive iodine treatment for some women can get their body into menopause early with symptoms of heat stroke and other problems that affect their sex life. Women and men's fertility can be damaged by iodine as well. It is advisable to wait at least 6 months before becoming pregnant or welcoming your child after treatment.
Last but not least is a lifelong requirement for thyroid hormone replacement therapy. After being diagnosed and treated for thyroid gland cancer, the need for hormones that stimulate the body's thyroid (TSH) need to be kept low. The pituitary gland is tricked out of producing hormones by the thyroid hormone replacement drug.
Every cancer brings challenges and changes to the body. Depending on one's thinking, these obstacles can be seen differently and each cancer patient will handle them in their own way. I choose not to allow them to interfere in my life and to make adjustments to address them.
