About Travertine ...
Travertine is a sedimentary rock formed in and around hot springs. It occurs when calcite (calcium carbonate) is deposited by water, and is then compressed over time into a solid structure. Travertines almost always have holes and channels through which hot water and gas escape during formation. In most cases, these holes are "filled" during fabrication with a product of size (such as grout) or resin (such as epoxy) to form a flat and flat surface.
Travertine is one of the softer flooring materials, registering 2.5 - 3.5 on the 1 to 10 Mohs Hardness Scale. Due to its softness, it is easily scratched and abraded by harder materials in compositions such as dirt and debris tracked from the outside, feet of unprotected furniture and poles, metal, and hard plastic. Like a very close cousin - limestone and marble, it is also very reactive to all acids, though light as orange juice.
Items That Affect the Look and Ability of Travertine
The following will affect the look and feel of your travertine:
- The quality of the stone itself
- Improper routine maintenance
- Exposure to chemicals
- Exposure to excess water
- Exposure to erosion
- Compression
Travertine quality varies depending on the place you find it. In general, high quality rocks will have a denser (compacted) structure, less "filling" areas (especially large, shallow areas where "fill" has less bonding), will be filled on both sides through "shoes. high heels, furniture feet, etc.), and will display high quality fabric finishes (no saws, defects, or unfinished areas).
Unfortunately, poor quality travertine will make itself known quickly once it's installed. Loss of fast charging, "punch through", pitting, and color change will occur at an accelerated rate. However, the maintenance tips that we will learn later in this document will help ensure that the incorrect behavior is minimized.
Improper routine maintenance
Improper routine maintenance is a major cause of travertine deterioration. More travertine is damaged by improper care and maintenance than other factors affecting it, including the quality of the stone. These maintenance errors include:
Mopping wet - Wet cleaning is the sole cause of "missing", spalling (physical deterioration and water pitting caused by water), and microbial growth (dark color change in holes, crevices, and grout lines). Travertine floors cannot be wet with rope mop (or any other type, for that matter) - they should be carefully wiped and damp with sponge paint or microfiber only.
Failure to Obey the Face Faced Right (Sealed) - Failure to maintain travertine properly (sealed) is a major cause of travertine deterioration, and plays more when the surface is wet. Proper control saves water, oil, and other pollutants from the rocks and helps prevent emptying, deterioration, microbial growth, and coloring.
Whenever moisture penetrates your travertine surface, it has both physical and chemical effects on the stone - both of which are negative. Wet rocks grow, drying stone contracts. Multiple expansion and contraction cycles weakened both the rock area and the filling, resulting in pitting and filling losses. Do you remember when your teacher called water "universal solvent"? Enough said.
Incorrect Use of Cleaning Material - I have never been amazed at the different types and types of cleaning chemicals (and professional cleaning staff) used on their travertine floors. I've seen everything from vinegar and water ("that's what my grandma used"), to heavy-duty rock cleaners ("the men in the tile shop say this is the strongest thing they have"), and almost everything else in between.
Instead of providing you with a list of things that can't be used on your travertine (it's a huge list), for the sake of smoothness I've given you a solution you need to use to regularly clean your travertine: a neutral pH (- 7), a cleaner that doesn't dyed specially designed for natural stone. No more. Never. Duration. (Yes, "nothing else" including Swifters and Windex!) For those who are unfamiliar with chelates (called 'kee' -lates), they are chemicals added to detergents and cleansers (including many routine stone cleansers) to "soften" it by collecting "hard water" minerals (such as calcium) from detergents so that it can clean more effectively. Sounds good, right? Wrong! Remember what your travertine primarily consists of - calcium! The floor is cleaned with chelated products that look dull, ugly, and lifeless.
Failure to Keep the Floor Properly Filled or Cleared - Earlier in the document, we touched on the Mohs Violence Scale and determined that travertines fell between 2.5 and 3.5, at the 10-point level. Unfortunately, fine gravel and grille are traced to your floor from list 6 to 7 at Mohs Scale - they are twice as hard as your travertines. If they are not removed regularly, they act like sandpaper on your floor. Every time someone walked on it, they were scratching and scratching the surface.
Failure to Replace Missing Content - When your travertine disappears, the area around the hole no longer has physical support and is more prone to further damage. Also, the holes left by the missing contents will take water, cleaning solutions, dirt, or whatever else falls into it. This will eventually lead to spalling, microbial growth, and internal damage to the stone.
Exposure to Chemicals - Your travertine should not be exposed to any chemical agent other than neutral, liquid-free and spray-cleaners mentioned earlier in this document. The use of high-quality alkaline cleaners is acceptable on a clean surface (impregnation), but only in such circumstances, and of course not on a regular basis.
However, life does happen, and sooner or later something will be lost. How you react to spills will depend on whether the spill is water-based or oil-based, alkaline or acidic. If your surface is thoroughly cleaned (sealed), you do not have to worry about both oil and non-acidic, water-based spills as long as you clean it for a reasonable period of time. If your surface is not properly cleaned, you will get stains - especially if it is an oil-based spill.
Acetic spills (orange juice, lemon juice, wine, vinegar, Margarita mixture, certain cosmetics, "tile cleaners", etc.) are completely different animals. They will immediately tap the surface - whether it is properly cleaned or not. Etches appear on your travertine as a place or area denser than the surrounding rocks, and they do not improve with the usual cleaning techniques.
You should try to make sure that these items (and others like them) do not touch your floor. If they do, remove them immediately from the surface by wiping them inside themselves to prevent spreading to the contaminated area. The good news is that you can eliminate small etches and mark yourself without any special tools or expertise. The bad news is that serious etches must be issued by a professional. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Compression Damage - The compressive damage to the travertine manifests itself in two ways - the "punching hole" in the area where it "fills" or the surface is weak, and with rock-solid scratches (the technical term "stun") to the extent that the visible mark remains, even after the initial drop physically.
A significant blow through the hole (under normal use conditions) generally indicates poor quality stone, fabrication, or both. If rocks or fillings break out through regular use of foot or foot traffic, it's time to have conversations with the people who sell them to you. However, it is not uncommon for good quality travertines to get occasional holes in high heels or heavy objects that concentrate on small areas (table legs, sofa feet, and so on). In one event, you should replace the missing fill as soon as possible to avoid further damage.
It's amazing when heavy objects are dropped or drugs cross the surface, producing marks or scratches. Upon impact, travertine compresses, leaving both scratches or physical signs, and scars. Even after the physical scratches have been removed, the scar can still be seen as the foundation stone is now denser than the uncompressed areas surrounding it. There is no easy solution to this problem once it happens, so the best course of action is to place a felt pad on all your heavy items (chair legs, table legs, etc.) to prevent compression.
