Grafted Vegetables and Tomatoes

History

Over the centuries, cultivation has been used in agriculture to improve the health, yield, and quality of fruits from woody species such as fruit trees and grape vines. Large-scale production of listed vegetables is emerging in Asia, where soil has been intensively cultivated for many years. In the 1920s, growers found that tapping the plant into squash or pumpkin rootstock significantly reduced the incidence of fusarium wilt. Currently, 81% of Korean vegetables and 54% of all Japanese vegetables (95% of Japanese melon, oriental melon, green house cucumber, tomato and eggplant) are produced in the combined plants. Vegetable listings are also popular throughout Europe, especially in Greece, Spain, France, Italy, and Morocco.

In the U.S., potential techniques for improving plant health and fruit production without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or soil fertilization / vapor sterilization have attracted the attention of green crop growers and organic farmers, especially on the short-lived East Coast.

The added benefits of vegetables include enhanced plant strength, stronger disease resistance, environmental stress tolerance, and more crops produced over a long harvest.

Disease resistance - This is probably the most important reason why commercial growers initially switch to the included vegetables. Following the success of Asian growers with mixed melon in the 1920s, tomato infestation emerged in the 1960s as a strategy to prevent soil-borne diseases such as bacteria, which can be difficult to eradicate in tomato plants due to their host variety and their ability to survive for years. in the ground.

When growers raise tomatoes and other solanum (potato, eggplant, pepper) in the same field or in the greenhouse soil year after year, various fungal diseases, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes can be established in the soil, leading to better yield poor with every subsequent harvest. Grafting has been found to be effective against drops of verticillium (Verticillium albo-atrum, V. dahliae), fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum), corky rot root (Pyrenochaeta lycosersici), nematode root knot (Meloidogyne), withering bacteria (Ralstonia solanacearum) mosaic virus, and Tomato virus detected.

Grafting can also help plants eliminate three other major tomato problems that we face in the Pacific Northwest: early wing (Alternaria solani), soluble (Phytophthora infestans), and end-rot (physiological disorders caused by low calcium levels). Poorly grown tomatoes to be started with or weakened by nematodes are more susceptible to early growth, so very strong tomatoes that are dyed with better resistance to disease and disease should be better. Method

After experimenting with several methods, we decided to use top notch (or tube) methods, a relatively new technique that must be performed under carefully controlled conditions to avoid stressing the exposed and new plants. When both roots and beetles have grown 2-4 true leaves, we cut each seedling directly under its cotyledon at a 45-degree angle, then used a special clip to attach the scion stems and upper leaves to the lower stem and root. The trunk must be of the same diameter so that their vascular tissue can be adjusted, allowing water and nutrients to flow to the trunk.

Once the scion and rootstock are cut together, we place them in a healing room that regulates temperature (70-80 degrees F), humidity (80-95%), and light to create the best conditions for vascular tissue to grow together and heal scars. For the first 2-4 days, the seedlings are kept in complete darkness. Over the next week or so, we are slowly introducing seedlings to lighten and reduce moisture to get used to the natural conditions. After another week or two in the greenhouse, they are ready to be moved to the park.

Throughout the process, plants must be carefully monitored to avoid interfering with corruption. Reducing water pressure is also important. Both seedlings and seedlings need to be watered well the day before fertilization, which is best done in protected areas, protected in the early morning or only after dark, when water transpiration is lowest.
