Scalp Acne: Causes, Treatment and Prevention

Acne can grow anywhere on the body where there is skin. Since scalp is an extension of the skin, it is possible to get acne in the area. Scalp acne is one of the many types of acne. However, unlike facial and body acne, scalp acne is smarter as it is protected by a few strands of hair. However, it can still be very troublesome. Fortunately, there are several ways to overcome it.
The cause of acne is similar to that which develops in other parts of the body. Excess oil or sebum production remains a major cause. However, there are other factors that cause this skin problem. These include poor hygiene, stress levels, insufficient food, hormone changes, seasonal changes, food allergies and heredity. Also, infections from certain microorganisms can cause scalp acne.
Scalp acne is not as shameful as facial acne. However, there are still irritation problems. Acne on the scalp can get into small bumps or itching. They usually appear on the front hairline, as well as on the back of the head near the neck. Blisters can be crusty and painful due to irritation of hair products, and from brushing or combing. Scalp acne can also be very painful due to inflammation.
Like many other types of acne, scalp acne is best suited to preventative measures rather than acne products and medicines. In fact, it is an easier way to prevent any kind than to actually treat it. One of the most useful ways to deal with this skin problem is to stop using oil-based hair styling products as they are known to cause acne on the scalp.
Also, keeping your scalp clean is a must. However, one should not overdo it to avoid drying the skin on the scalp. It is wise to use a hair shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for sensitive scalp. Hair needs to be washed thoroughly all the time to remove dirt and dust that may develop along with oil or sebum on the scalp. Styling products should not be left on hair overnight. Shampoo and conditioner should be rinsed thoroughly to avoid residue.
Because it is covered with hair, acne on the scalp is treated in a different but simple way. The most popular treatment for scalp acne is the use of anti-dandruff shampoo. This shampoo contains zinc which has been proven to be very effective in eliminating acne. However, scalp acne can worsen a condition called scalp folliculitis. In this case, it is best to seek medical advice from a dermatologist. They can prescribe the right treatment for this skin problem.
