Stretch marks can appear to anyone; men or women, fat or thin, and young and old. In most cases, they do not hurt or irritate the skin until many people are unaware of it. However, when they are really bad or noticeable someone can become obsessed with removing the stretch marks.
Stretch marks occur when your skin is stretched for long periods of time, usually quickly gaining or losing weight, or stimulating growth. When the fibers in the skin are pulled to their maximum they cause scarring, and when the strain first appears they are red due to the ruptured micro-bloodstream and bleeding.
Men also get stretch marks but the problem is bigger for women: 70 percent of teenage girls get it and more than 90 percent of pregnant women get it.
Once you have this scar, it's difficult, but not impossible, to reduce it.
Here are some ways to prevent or eliminate stretch marks:
- Keep your body hydrated. Many of us spend our days in constant dehydration and if your body is not constantly replenished with water then your skin will suffer. This includes avoiding excess alcohol that will cause you to lose more. People with dry skin are known to be more likely to get stretch marks than those with normal skin types
- Moisturize your skin regularly. For the same reason that keeping your body hydrated from the inside, you need to make sure your skin is nourished from the outside as well. Exercising body lotions into the skin daily will help maintain or enhance your skin's appearance and elasticity. You do not need to invest in expensive products. Cocoa butter moisturizer, baby oil or home remedies work well.
- Top in your vitamins and minerals. Vitamins A, C and E and zinc are all good for your skin. In fact, you can take your vitamins nutritionally and directly to your skin to help eliminate stretch marks.
- Eat healthy. Many people will say that your diet has no effect on your skin condition, but it is the reason that if you put in the garbage all the time, you can just expect your body to look like junk. A balanced diet will help contribute to a healthier body and eating foods rich in vitamins A, C and E, and zinc, as we have found, will help enrich your skin. Vitamin supplements are a great help but not as effective as consuming vitamins and minerals in your daily diet.
