Does Your Baby Have Baby Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that can affect people of all backgrounds, every gender, and even age. Although most people with acne experience their first acne at the age of 13, some people have acne as a baby. Did you know that babies can have acne? Baby acne is more common then you would think. Many new parents are worried about baby acne. No worries, baby acne is a normal part of life.

So what exactly is baby acne?

Do the same types of acne as a teen or an adult have to deal with? No, not exactly. Baby acne comes in the form of a small lump of red. Baby acne can also appear as whiteheads. However, acne is not the same as teen and adult acne. You don't have to worry about your baby getting pock marks from this type of acne. At this age, you should worry about your baby getting scars from picking up chickenpox later on baby acne.

Many parents wonder if their baby will have acne at a young age and even in their teens. Parents can easily rest on baby acne that usually disappears when your baby is between four and six months old. If your baby still has acne after six months then you should consult your pediatric specialist. Your baby may need to be evaluated to make sure it is not another type of skin or rash.

Many parents also wonder if they should treat baby acne the same way they treat teen and adult acne. Teenagers and adults face acne for different reasons and different types of acne in general. Therefore, baby acne cannot be treated with soap, cream or lotion. Instead, wash your baby's face with water once a day. Do not use soaps or lotions as these items can actually make baby acne worse.

If your baby has acne treatment then you can consult your doctor for guidance. Your doctor may prescribe skin medications specifically for your baby's skin. Do not use your own medicine on your baby as it may be dangerous. Also try using detergents like Dreft which are easy on the skin. Sometimes baby acne is colored by a skin allergy. So using an allergen-free product is your best bet.

What is the cause of baby acne?

In general, baby acne is caused by the transfer of hormones between mother and baby before birth. These hormones stimulate the oil glands to produce oil. This oil then causes baby acne. Although this is a widely accepted cause, the true cause of baby acne is still being studied.

If you are not sure if your baby may have acne then you should consult your doctor. They will help you monitor the situation especially if it is not explained by the age of six months. If your baby has acne then you know that you are not alone. Your baby's acne will eventually disappear leaving the skin clear.
