An Uncertain Battlefield

Cancer is a word that sends a rumble to our spine, we don't recognize it as it affects us or someone we love. We hope that this is not something that will attack our lives, but if cancer does bring its downfall, we have to fight everything.

All cancer fights have two fighters to win: the disease and the one who fights the disease. After fierce battles, there are always losers. However, make no mistake, sometimes winning a battle doesn't mean winning the war, it's just a temporary victory, because the whole war is ruined.

In 2010, I found myself at the forefront of a battle involving my husband, Don, against his enemy: Mucinous adenocarcinoma, a rare form of cancerous appendicitis. Unfortunately, after a fierce five-year battle, Don, lost his war; and devastating destruction, as this terrible disease, in various mutations, unintentionally attacks the next victims. In fact, about 1,685,210 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in 2016 alone, leaving more than half the lifeless victims on the battlefield. Science is advancing and one day may be a cure for cancer, but that day still presents us.

Like good soldiers, we browse the Internet for information, desperate for any news we find. I'm all eaten. As I searched for answers, Don spat on his body that betrayed him. Over the course of five long years, I began to understand the disease and its path of destruction.

DIAGNOSIS

I remember Don's appendix cancer diagnosis that brought us all by surprise. Don had just undergone surgery to remove the excess scar tissue that had formed from the surgery several years earlier. Doctors believe it was scar tissue that caused Don's stomach pressure. After the tissue is removed then the biopsy. This biopsy revealed her cancer.

The oncologist determined the site of the cancer's origin, was Don's appendix, and described the development of the disease as 111C, meaning it had invaded the lymph nodes and lymphatic tissue. We both know that people can live without attachments, but we have never associated cancer with this small organ measuring 2-20 centimeters.

We also know that most attachment cancers found through routine surgery, like Don's, make early detection difficult. Don and I discussed the symptoms before her cancer diagnosis because we wanted to determine when the cancer started.

Of course, there is no way to say for sure, but we do recall that he suffered several months before his massive abdominal surgery. He has a severe, bloated stomach that is difficult to touch. It feels like basketball. It is a painful bloating that will eventually dissolve and give him relief. This bloating only happens every few months, so Don doesn't associate it with anything serious or life-threatening.

That bloating may be the first sign we are ignoring. Maybe if we have investigated the cause of its bloating, we can catch cancer before it spreads.

Most mucinous adenocarcinomas are more aggressive than normal adenocarcinomas and are more difficult to treat. Everyone, the prognosis is not good. Left untreated, the tumor will continue to grow, destroy all organs, prevent digestion, and eventually starve to death.

ASSESSMENT FOR ANSWERS

When Don's cancer was diagnosed, we began a desperate search for proven treatment, relying heavily on Dr. Google to educate us about appendix cancer.

There are valuable resources online, such as 'The American Cancer Society' which helped deepen my understanding of cancer. There is also a great blog posted by individuals who fight the disease.

Lack of appendicitis - and lack of data - quickly shattered our hopes, as there was no proven cure. It is my mission to understand the disease. Through my research, I have found that all cancers do not act or progress together. This statement is particularly relevant to attachment cancer because of its tendency to develop blockage. There is our first indication of Don's bloat: it has been caused by blockage of the tumor.

NOT ALL TUMORS ARE SOMETHING

Mucus cancer tumors, as in the case of Don, develop in flat pieces of tissue, making them more difficult to detect in scans. Adenocarcinoma mucous tumors produce "mucin" which is a major component of mucus. "Adeno" means gland. The glands release enzymes inside (endocrine glands) or outside the body (exocrine glands). The term "mucinous" means a lot of mucus. Put everything down and get Mucinous Adenocarcinoma, a very dangerous form of cancer. Many experts suggest that the presence of mucous cancer cells can spread faster through the body than other forms of cancer. While not something we want to hear, it is important to find the right treatment.

THE BATTLEGROUND

Attachment cancer is extremely rare and affects only 2% of all cancers diagnosed. This disease can be very complicated to treat.

With little information to guide us, cancer is our daily crisis. We do not have a mechanism for solving problems in thinking about these dangerous diseases, or how to formulate outcomes for the cancer crisis. We often find ourselves with a lack of information that is important for making good decisions. Therefore, we find ourselves in a weak spot, at the worst time of our lives, that hurts what to do next.

Some doctors are involved in Don's treatment, including oncologists, gastroenterologists, dieticians and family physicians. They do not always agree with the treatment protocol and thus create a dilemma we do not expect, or do not know how to navigate.

Our battle during the fight against cancer also brings with it a hard reality: the existence of 'behind the scenes', which can change at any given time. There are good times, better times and times that we can't.

My best advice to anyone caught up in a battle like ours is to take every offer you have. Especially if you are the guardian of someone fighting cancer. No one can or should be "The Rone Ranger" because they won't be effective all the time, because they need their rest too. Offerings of help will come in a big wave, especially early in your journey, and it is important that you accept them all.

THIS REQUIRED TO HEAR SPECIAL QUESTIONS

With a bit of information on the internet about attachment cancer, I took advantage of the many opportunities to ask many of our doctor questions.

One of the biggest moments of 'aha' I do, unless you ask specific questions, or investigate more detailed feedback, you may lose valuable information that could prove to be a great help in combating your cancer.

I believe that sometimes, when speaking with experts on a particular subject, they will choose the information they consider important to share. There are many assumptions on your part that you should be aware of, or they are not necessarily relevant to mention. These experts have a lot of information. Sometimes the most important information is not spoken. Unfortunately, you have to be a very knowledgeable patient advocate because they will not always share what you need to hear.

This awareness of the incomplete information from our team of doctors, and the complex organization of all the information gathered in a comprehensible format, is key to the acceptance of our key illnesses and weapons.

Talking to and questioning surgeon Don, and then his oncologist, gave me a lot of information that eventually started out together. My investigation of knowledge gave me a clear understanding of what was going on inside Don's body and why.

HOW, WHAT'S INSIDE?

During one of my conversations with Don's surgeon, he described what looked like Don's stomach cancer while undergoing surgery. Mucus-like jelly was mutated out of control, building its way from Don's appendix to his stomach cavity.

There, the material formed a sun-sized tumor along Don's stomach. These tumors, too numerous to count, cling to their intestines and spread the white web to the entire lining of the abdominal cavity. Then we realized that we were fighting against a lot of tumors, not just one as we had originally thought.

TREATMENT OR TRIAL

Once we know what we are fighting for, like many in Don's position, we choose chemotherapy and its destruction. Excessive weight loss, nausea, insomnia, hair loss, and overall fatigue. We think what doesn't kill him makes him better. Boy, are we wrong?

Attachment cancer is rare, and appendix-specific clinical trials are challenging to find. I learned that many clinical trials cannot accept patients who have been treated with chemotherapy in the past year. In the background, we will stop chemotherapy after two treatments and join the trial. Hindsight is always 20:20. It's easy to know the right thing to do after something has happened, but it's hard to predict the future.

Decided to turn on the cure

Don underwent four rounds of chemotherapy to treat his cancer. After each round, CT and Pet scans were ordered to monitor her tumor growth. The fact that Don's tumor is flat and hidden in the test is a perfect example of what I mean when I say, 'some doctors think you already know this information.' So, even though the tumor showed stability following these tests, our false hopes were quickly dismissed once we found the test inconclusive. The harsh reality is that his cancer is out of control. Now, he needs a feeding tube to survive.

Then came the second surgery for another bowel obstruction.

After this surgery, Don's cancer is determined to advance to Stage 4. It is a hopeless terminal for the future. They take out the feed tube. She was placed under home hospice care.

Don continued to fight his cancer for another five months, displaying daily acts of courage in his condition. He never practiced the "why me" attitude and instead focused on trusting, family and feeling better.

Although in pain, he was quick to entertain his visitors, telling jokes and telling stories from the past, all the way he faced. Strangely, this gives me comfort.

ENJOY THE END AND LEAVE THE NEW BEGINNING

Unfortunately, once the cancer progresses to its final destruction, it's difficult. I had to let go of Don by assuring him that I would be fine. I gave him permission to leave this world for a place of complete healing. After putting up a good fight, Don passed away on January 3, 2015.

The war is long, hard, and intense. Find a purpose, or answer, why God allows such suffering to be answered in this life. Our personal experiences are accompanied by many emotional and low levels. I appreciate the time. Even at the time of submission, I was filled with awe and awe at the constant presence of God.

What Don has left is something to see. During a battle with mucinous adenocarcinoma, he became part of a study conducted by the "American Cancer Society," which detected symptoms, treatment tolerance, post-treatment results, travel of this dreadful disease, and its effects on people physically and emotionally.

Also, because of the rare complexity of cancer, mucinous adenocarcinoma, many of its medical teams now have a clearer understanding of this rare cancer, which can help promote better treatment and outcomes for future generations.

All cancers are ugly and within striking distance of each of us. My prayer is that no one should fight for this disease. Part of the healing process after the battle with cancer is sharing information. The spoils of war, I suppose. But maybe my small point of view may prove to be important to you or someone struggling with this terrible disease and giving it another weapon in the much-needed weapon.
